SNACK IDEAS
The following are some ideas that are ideal for snacks either when you are at home or when you have time to throw them into a container to take with you.
Remember to look for things with a small amount of ingredients, ingredients
you can pronounce and ones that are lower in sugar. Try to focus on the
essential things your body needs to thrive - protein, healthy fats, carbohydrates
and fibre from vegetables and fruits.
Wholegrain crackers or vegetable sticks with hummus, tzatziki or guacamole dip
A date with nut butter
Smoothies that contain fruit and also at least one vegetable and a protein such as natural yoghurt or nuts/seeds made with either cow’s milk or nut milk
Sea salt popcorn (not the microwave one) - Serious popcorn is the best or Cobs is ok too
Rice cakes that contain grains or seeds with cheddar or cottage cheese, or a nut- butter and fruit
Fresh fruit (Try to pair with a good fat such as nuts)Nuts and seeds. You can make your own trail mix with nuts, seeds, dried fruits, dark chocolate chips and pretzels
Home-made or a good store-bought granola either on its own or with natural yoghurt
Natural yoghurt with frozen or fresh berries or cooked and cooled apple
Baked goods made at home with nutritious ingredients. Try to sweeten mostly with fruit or sugars with low GI such as coconut sugar or maple syrup. These are less likely to cause the rapid sugar spike and fall
Protein balls made with nutritious ingredients such as dates, coconut, nuts and seeds
Protein powders to mix into smoothies or put into baked goods (source a clean one without all the added extra nasties)
Protein bars are ok, but be wary not all are made with healthy ingredients. Fodbods is a good brand.
HEATHLY CHOC MILKSHAKE SMOOTHIE
Ingredients:
½ cup of almond milk
1 Tbsp of any seeds you like – Chia and sunflower work well.
1 Tbsp of cacao nibs
1 ½ Tbsp cacao powder (not cocoa- easy to mix the two up if you’re not used to buying)
A small handful of nuts – can choose almond, pecans, walnuts etc..
About 4 slices of frozen zucchini
A big handful of spinach
½ pitted date
3-4 small ice blocks (I set coconut water into ice cube trays and use these, but can use normal)
Method:
Blend all together in a blender, ensuring the liquid is put into blender before any other ingredients and blend until smooth.
COCAO WITH GREENS SMOOTHIE
This smoothie packs a punch when it comes to nutritional value. I often have it for a mid-morning snack or a quick breaky when I’m on the run.
Ingredients:
½ cup of almond milk or other milk of choice
¼ cup of coconut water
½ Tbsp of flax meal
1 ½ Tbsp cacao powder
1 tsp of natural peanut butter
A 4cm piece of frozen zucchini (I chop and freeze in bulk)
A big handful of spinach (I like to freeze it or buy organic pre-frozen spinach)
½- 1 pitted date
1-2 large coconut water ice blocks (if you like a thick consistency)
Method:
Place all ingredients together in a blender
Ensure liquid is put into blender before any other ingredients
Blend until smooth. Enjoy!
